Greetings From The Museum
We'd Like To Welcome You!
Several years ago, I was introduced to the Sarasota Chalk Festival through one of MCMA’s Board of Trustees. I looked up the event’s website and was fascinated by the amount of talent that was exhibited on the streets of Sarasota. Additionally, this festival brings in an economic impact of $10.2 million in 3 days for the City of Sarasota. I immediately decided I had to bring this kind of event to Marietta to fulfill our mission statement of “Building Community Through Art.” I reached out to the Sarasota event planner, Denise Kowal, and our festival launched.
For the first year, MCMA flew in two professional artists from California. After seeing their work, I started reaching out to other artists to join us in Marietta. The following year, as part of Art in the Park, MCMA brought in 20 artists. However, we decided that Labor Day weekend is too hot for artists to be chalking on the pavement, so we moved the event to October and the Marietta Chalk Fest grew to 40 professional artists.
In 2015 we added a Craft Beer Festival and decided to trademark a new name: Chalktoberfest. The response to our festival has been overwhelming. Chalktoberfest won “Event of the Year” through Cobb Travel and Tourism and Steve Thunder Tumlin, Mayor of the City of Marietta, awarded the “Mayor’s Art Award” to the festival. With the help of generous sponsors and patrons we have added even more chalk artists for 2016, and we are excited to announce that a partnership with the Canadian Consulate and their artist will make this year’s festival an international event! Our attendance grew to approximately 30,000 visitors in 2015, and we anticipate even more growth in years to come.
We look forward to seeing you in October,
Executive Director, Marietta/Cobb Museum of Art
